Genesis 32b Commentary

Genesis 32b Commentary

Jacob is all by himself. No wife. No children. No possessions. He must face God alone. A closet is a good place for prayer. A good closet is one without worldly possessions. Not because you don’t have them but because you deliberately isolate yourself from them!

It is always a difficult place for a man to be in. Do you sit down and fold your arms because you have prayed? Or, do you trust the LORD God that your steps have been ordered by Him, and consequently, you are on solid ground with the physical means?

We can look closely and see that Jacob has a bigger battle to fight.

The fight wasn’t physical but real. The opponent wasn’t weak. The opponent had power above and beyond Jacob’s capability. Jacob is a five-year-old boy who fights with his dad in a game whose parameters are set by his dad.

The fight is about the blessing. He has always fought for it. He sought it and he found it. We can fault the methods but not the ambition.

The evangelist begins from this point. A man in a nightclub is seeking joy but he won’t get it this way. Point him to this man in this chapter who fights Jacob. He is the only one to fight with. Waste no more time and energy on other fake battle frontiers.

He is the one with the blessing, not Esau; not Isaac. Let this man touch your walk. Leave the prayer room disabled; unable to walk but with a blessing – Limping but with a blessing! The spiritual battle has physical consequences. Your physical walk cannot be the same.

Jacob becomes Israel. The prophecy is complete. The blessing has settled. But the man won’t tell Jacob His name. He is simply “I,AM”, we guess.
