Genesis 32 Commentary

Genesis 32 Commentary

We have seen an increase in the number of angelic encounters. We also observe how these encounters come at specific points in Jacob’s life.

The frequency increases with age, generally. It could be a lesson that a man is expected to understand more and consequently, see more of God in everything as they age. The LORD God has shown up each time Jacob makes a major decision, particularly whenever he transitions or relocates.

The saint learns to call upon the LORD whenever they transition or relocate. When Jacob’s career at Laban & Sons came to an end, the LORD showed up to give direction. But we also know the LORD showed up when Jacob needed to begin to think about his own economy.

The angels meet Jacob, v1. But we know the LORD God has left Jacob! Angelic appearances are for humans! Humans must know the LORD hasn’t left them. Under the New Testament, angelic appearances are a function of faith rather than a physical one, though individuals do encounter angels quite often – and we don’t know it.

Fear was a constant “principality” in Abraham’s line. The patriarchs weren’t great at handling fear. But things change and we see Jacob run to God in this moment – so admirable! Yes, he feels his brain must work but he goes to his God for a solution. What a relief! We haven’t seen much of this in Jacob!

Verse 10 is everything. Jacob is broken. His eyes open. He hasn’t deserved the kindness and faithfulness from the LORD God. This is a game-changer! When he purchased the birthright, he didn’t deserve it. When he deceived Isaac, he didn’t deserve it. When he deceived Laban, he didn’t deserve it. It makes sense in prayer to look at your own curriculum vitae against the generosity of Heaven. Healing starts from this point.

Look at what you had and look at what you have. Measure yourself against yourself and see the difference. See how the LORD God has fulfilled His word in your life – all underserved! Know your debt.

Jacob has come to a good spot in his life. He can see the faithfulness of the God of his fathers, Abraham and Isaac. It is interesting that this point comes when a man is solutionless. It is a point of brokenness and self-awareness.
