Genesis 27 Commentary
At the end of the day, the score line would read, Jacob 1, Esau 0. But the victory is not celebrated and the loser doesn’t concede defeat. There is deep pain, extreme fear, death threats, and more scheming and deception. There is zero godliness in the entire process!
“The Lord your God gave me success,” he replied. This is Jacob’s statement to Isaac but don’t quote it as it is all lies!
Rebekah’s godliness is a big question. Jacob isn’t any better. Esau’s religion is comparable to Cain’s religion. See how he plots to kill Jacob because of God’s blessing! The fruit of the Spirit is love, peace, and joy…but we can tell Rebekah, Jacob, and Esau are so lacking in these qualities that we feel justified to doubt their spirituality.
And Rebekah, against her own son! So shocking!
We doubt if Isaac has heard God concerning Esau. But we know the old man must do what was customary then. The blessing must go to the firstborn son. In this way, Isaac heard the static voice of the LORD and followed procedure.
Rebekah did hear God when the children were still in her womb. She sought to help the process by all means necessary. Lying was in Jacob’s blood through his fathers but Rebekah added more fuel to it. She shielded and protected Jacob’s deception.
Yes, Jacob receives the blessing but it means nothing at this moment. It is empty. The LORD God remains silent.
Rebekah’s mistake was to think of the blessing of the LORD as a verbal object that could be stolen. She thought of deception as an innocent vehicle to the blessing. Esau’s view wasn’t any better. If only he know the God of his father Isaac in a personal way! Then he probably didn’t have to worry about the theft!
“Walk blamelessly before me” was a key line in the blessing but Rebekah, Jacob, and Esau didn’t care.
The two sons and their mother are a good example of a vanity game – chasing wind. You catch nothing! And at this moment, they all fail!
Yes, Jacob would connect to the God of his fathers, Abraham and Isaac, but it’s not in this chapter and not in this moment. And definitely not as a consequence of Rebekah’s scheming or Jacob’s efforts – we know there would be plenty of it!
A man must know the time of his departure is near. Equally, a man must know that they don’t know when. What blessing have you passed on to your child? There is no better gift than the gift of God’s presence – the God of Isaac. He is called Jesus in these times. Then you can rest in peace.
