Genesis 25c Commentary

Genesis 25c Commentary

“Look, I am about to die,” Esau said. “What good is the birthright to me?”

Of course, we know better. Esau isn’t about to die. We also know what a lie looks like. It looks so attractive (life-saving) that you feel you cannot do without it. Esau has fallen into the common deception of the human heart’s desires.

Deception blinds you to the consequences of your decision. You have a diminished view of the consequences. He is not about to die, yet the decision he makes is based on this lie! Aren’t we reminded of the same lie in the garden of the LORD?

Replace “red stew” with “fruit” and know the serpent isn’t far! Destinies are lost in these moments!

Hunger is a feeling like many other feelings. Together, they are responsible for many losses. Anger, jealousy, greediness, sex, ego…it’s the same list. They are responsible for presenting a false picture and the victim makes decisions based on a lie. Esau isn’t the last victim.

Jacob is one very interesting character. Second place in the family means the blessing isn’t his. But he must get the blessing at all costs. He works for it. He pays for it. But we loathe this method. It’s terrible! Thank God it hasn’t worked!

There is one way to God’s blessing but it isn’t the Jacob way! There are many ways to lose your destiny. Esau’s way is definitely one of them!

Esau is selfish. He doesn’t care about his family line. He loses it for them! He is a good example of ambitionless brains – men who only think about their tummies.

Both men must find the God of Abraham. None of them is good enough! Esau has zero interest while Jacob has the interest but with wrong tools, wrong motives, and evil methods. It’s a bad start for the boys!

We have a simple list of lessons. When emotions swell up (hunger, anger, sex, rage, jealousy…), think twice. Think of the truth (Truth). When an emotion to make it big beyond your natural limitation swells up, think twice. Think of the right way (Way).
