Genesis 24 Commentary

Genesis 24 Commentary

The death of Sarah in chapter 23 is swiftly followed by an announcement that Abraham is very old. The blessing has to change hands. Isaac is commanded not to marry from the ungodly Mesopotamia or indeed from the ungodly Canaanites.

The key line is how the LORD oversees an entire marriage operation. Objectives are set and effort is made to achieve the objectives. The LORD moves and Rebekah is secured for Isaac.

We have noted with increased admiration for Abraham’s servant’s tact. He does everything in the marketing books to sell Isaac as a wealthy and suitable man for the beautiful Rabekah. But it’s not bribery as the gold only comes out after Rebekah is won over. Even here, we can see the crookedness of Laban. Later, Laban would father Leah and Rachael. These became Jacob’s wives. More on Laban later.

Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death. Verse 67.

Isaac missed his mother. Rebekah became a mother to Isaac. Rebekah took the place of Sarah. Every man needs a mother, even when they are grown. When you marry right, you won’t miss your mother!

Key lessons for the unmarried: Set your objectives, draw the lines, and then set out on the search. The marriage line between the believers and the unbelievers became part of the Law under Moses generations later – then we know the patriarch Abraham spoke God’s word and will!

We saw it with Noah. We have seen it with Abraham. Isaac shall bless his children. The LORD will speak through His servants more and more. It also means the special encounters with the LORD God shall become more spaced!

These men shall be called prophets. Abraham is the first known prophet and this title is used by God Himself. The first occurrence of this word comes when the LORD God refers to Abraham as a prophet. Chapter 20 verse 7.
