Genesis 22 Commentary
The LORD God speaks to Abraham, again. The early years of Abraham’s walk with the LORD showed us the various ways the LORD used to communicate with Abraham: Visions, dreams, angelic visitations, and special appearances of the man-God.
This chapter includes another one: the audible voice of the LORD from heaven. Verse 11.
It’s about Abraham’s son Isaac. He must sacrifice him to the LORD God!
But isn’t this request the same as the condemned practice of the Canaanite peoples, child sacrifice? Of course, it is! Looking at it from this angle, we can tell the LORD God has taught Abraham an important lesson. He is never to be worshipped this way!
Sacrifice and offering You did not desire; My ears You have opened. Burnt offering and sin offering You did not require. Psalm 40 verse 6. NKJV.
Indeed, by this practical lecture, Abraham’s ears were truly pieced, fully opened. He understood.
Yes, there would be a sacrifice but the LORD will provide it. Calvary is in view, but it won’t be until several generations. For now, the lecture has ended but what a lecture! The context is also very clear: No child sacrifice, no sacrifice of self, or no sacrifice of another human! “On the mountain of the LORD, it will be provided”.
Then the LORD repeats the promise: “Through your offspring, all the nations on earth will be blessed”.
Probably Abraham looked at Isaac as the offspring. We shall see how Isaac’s life turns out. But we are sure of one thing: The blessing of the LORD shall rest on the nations because of Abraham’s offspring or seed.
The chapter closes with a note on Nahor’s sons. We can see the interest. It’s Rebekah! The holy script focuses on one objective. Rebekah would be Isaac’s wife, a couple of days from now.
