Genesis 20 Commentary

Genesis 20 Commentary

The placement of the events in Genesis is sometimes off. Well, it’s never the intention of the holy script to present the material in chronological order. Most likely, these events happened long before Abraham was both powerful and wealthy. And Sarah was still on the market!

Each age group has its own set of sins! Therefore, prayer requests can only be similar but never the same for the age groups.

But we doubt if Abraham brought his fears to the LORD God in prayer. We see a fearful Abraham turning to deception. He lies. But God saves him!

How we wish he had kept quiet after the LORD God had saved him! But he talks. The talk is annoying, embarrassing, and altogether needless. We feel his shame. Yes, we feel it because that is often our shame.

How often we have blamed traffic for our late-coming when we know traffic is innocent though present in the process! We cannot give because our income is low. But the truth has nothing to do with a low income! But the LORD God sees through all human “stupidity”.

Abraham called Sarah his sister to save his neck. Full stop. Forget his other talk!

The life of Abraham is of interest to us because we are on the same journey. We have the promises of the LORD God but Abimeleks show up quite often. We have our own moments of fear. We lie. We fail to depend on the LORD.

It’s all stupidity and you don’t want to look at it again. But the LORD God is merciful! Aggressively merciful! Every saint can sing this song endlessly! Probably, that’s the pick of this chapter – the mercies of the LORD God!
