Genesis 10 Commentary

Genesis 10 Commentary

Rightly called the “Table of Nations” Chapter 10 lists accounts of Noah’s sons. While Chapter 5 gives us a single line from Adam to Noah, Chapter 10 is more generous. We have everyone and everyone else. It’s an attempt to explain where everyone is coming from.

Nimrod is the first powerful ruler on Earth. We can smell a problem. We came here thinking all humans are rulers!

It is actually worse. Nimrod is coming from Ham. Yes, the same problematic Ham. What happened to the curse? Could we guess that the curse landed on only one son called Canaan? Were the other sons of Ham, Cush, Egypt, and Put spared? (Gen. 9:25).

We can spare ourselves the trouble of details as we know the term “son” doesn’t exactly mean a biological offspring. Equally, the term “father” is anything in the frame of an ancestor, predecessor, or founder.

Regardless, humans begin to rule themselves politically. ‘Mighty’ rules; muscles count. They begin to enslave each other.

The problem of Ham is a human problem. The curse of Canaan is a human disaster. We cannot remove ourselves from the story of Genesis. We are all in it together – we humans. Broken at the factory! Mending happens at the factory!

Leadership systems are deep in sin because the blessing of the LORD lifts. In its place is self-rule, where ‘mighty’ rules. “Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD”.
