Genesis 8 Commentary
The word ‘altar’ appears for the first time when Noah decides to offer a sacrifice to the LORD God. The altar would be a special name given to the table used by humans to serve the LORD God. Food for the LORD God is served here.
Like Abel, Noah does a good job with his sacrifice. And there is no Cain to slaughter him! A couple of very important things happen. The LORD God accepts the offering and secondly, the LORD God speaks a blessing to preserve humanity, regardless.
The opening pages of the holy script give us a couple of equations. A happy God equals life and more life. A displeased God equals scattering and death. Physical death is rarely implied; we shall stick to this picture.
Worship unlocks God’s floodgates of blessings! Noah’s worship defines creation. No more floods! No more unchecked anger against the ground! The annihilation of humanity on this scale won’t happen again. We have Noah’s worship to thank for this generosity!
The saint can reflect on this promise and see how the machinations of evil humans cannot lead to the annihilation of the human race. Certain things are tightly defined and the saint need not fear. The LORD God has the final say.
The usual lie is to have a larger-than-life appearance. The serpent exaggerates his power and influence. But the saint should always know the LORD God has the final say. The Hebrews knew better! Their God held all the keys possible. He was their ‘everything! A mere distraction, yes; but never a competitor! The LORD God remained in charge and ultimately controlled life proceedings. Nothing has changed.
Chapter 8 is sweet. Chapter 6 saw the LORD God regret that He had made humans. A happy God in Chapter 8 speaks to posterity and humanity can bask in the blessings!
The saint’s battle reduces to this one most important item: Worship. Put the right worship on the altar and you walk away with unimaginable abundance! It defines your destiny! In many places, including these lines, worship can be translated as obedience. See how obedience melts Heaven’s Boardroom decisions!
