Genesis 7 Commentary
“Seven pairs of every kind of clean animal…” And, “Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights…”
Here we are again with the famous “seven” and “forty”. Then you know the scripture is talking about something else behind the numbers! But we leave it there!
The scripture explains the genesis of humans and the material world we know – creation. It also explains God’s intervention. When Abel died, the LORD God mourned and Cain was scattered. Noah’s flood is yet another intervention. The LORD God isn’t an absentee landlord!
Creatures are saved in pairs “to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth”. This is the only ordained way for posterity. The LORD God won’t go back to the factory! The perfection of the LORD God is such that there isn’t a reset button! Preserve what is there. Let there be continuity!
The LORD God would perpetuate life through Noah! The LORD God has discriminated against the sinners! Righteousness has gained. Wicked has lost.
The scripture has shown us the generosity of the LORD. We have also seen the justice of the LORD. Saints can ponder these events and see a God who intervenes. A career in wickedness comes to an end. There is an expiry date to violence. Indeed, the LORD God does intervene to keep his own safe!
