Genesis 3 Commentary

Genesis 3 Commentary

Genesis isn’t history. Check it to understand the present. It should be called “Revelation 1.0”. Of course, the entire holy script fits this description.

Chapter 3 closes one phase while commencing another. The new phase comes with its own terms, phrases, definitions, and outcomes.

The word mortals never existed until Chapter 3. You never asked your child to work hard to make it in life. “No sweat, no sweet” never existed. A man who has worked hard all his life is never hungry. He has served his punishment well!

The pain of childbearing (parenting) is the pain of life. Death is a cruel master. The older you become the longer you want to live; life becomes sweeter. These realities must be checked against the facts presented in this Chapter. How did we get here?

Chapter 3 commences an interesting phase in creation. Rebellion occurs and humanity is scattered away from Eden.

Of course, as we read the holy script, we shall hear about another rebellion beyond Eden’s borders. The serpent was scattered away from Heaven, hence his presence in Eden.

A lot of things happen as a consequence of humanity’s rebellion. Adam’s immediate response is to hide from the LORD. He stitches together leaves as pants to cover his nakedness. Pants out of leaves! The LORD isn’t happy with Adam’s solution. Who would? Pants of leaves? The LORD has a better solution: a garment made from animal skins.

Human solutions! Solutions? Yes. But never good enough! We can see God’s continued care for humanity. Keep in mind the term garment. We shall find more appearances of the word as we navigate the pages of the holy script. We could be referring to the same need – to cover nakedness.

We shall dig deeper into Chapter 3 to unpack a couple of revelations in the next 2 or 3 days.
