Genesis 1b Commentary
The LORD God creates living things with posterity in mind. We have an initial set of plants but the blessing is becomes the capacity to reproduce and keep the system running endlessly.
Humanity is created with the same parameters. Reproduction is key. Humanity has another important layer of functionality: Dominion. We a hint here that fruitfulness for humanity is a loaded term. It won’t translate into the same set of activities as for the animals.
Of course, we have seen how the LORD achieves posterity in different ways for animals and plants.
We could zoom in and see how humanity becomes fruitful. It’s an interesting package! He must work the land and the LORD provides the environment (the ground and a set of supporting conditions for farming).
We shall see hints of how “fruitfulness” unwinds down the ages. Mining becomes an important activity. Discovery is envisioned.
The opening lines of Genesis are an invitation to the reader to stop and marvel at creation as an act of God. It is complex but beautiful. The details are beyond our understanding. But scripture allows us to have a “wow” experience.
It was intentional. It was planned and executed in time and space to perfection. The LORD makes no mistakes! He is ever right!
The creation of humanity has an added layer of significance for us. Humanity is created in the image of God. We could look at humanity and guess certain parameters about the Creator God, albeit imperfectly since the image isn’t perfect any more.
We sense authority, power, sovereignty, knowledge, patience (nothing is created all at once). We can also see organization. Humans don’t store sugar and salt in the same container! Plants and humanity may share the same space only because one of them is food or deco!
Humanity has studies his environment and has began to discover more but everything is there because the Creator God designed it so. Let praise flow. Let thanksgiving flow.
