Genesis 1 Commentary

Genesis 1 Commentary

The fallen man looks at Jesus as the Messiah. The created man looks at Jesus as the Creator. John 1 verses 1 to 5.

First: “Let there be light”. Second: God separates light from darkness. The day is done; the shift ended.

“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1 verses 4 and 5.

What are we looking at here?

Jesus is the light of the world. But He is also the Word of God. He becomes the active ingredient in the creation process. Leave light alone, at the top of the pile. Now look at the rest of creation and you find the word spoken at each point.

Nothing comes into being without the word (Word). Of course, out there is darkness or nothingness.

The saint feels the weight of these words and knows Jesus is life. There is no life without Jesus. Yes, Jesus is big news, but importantly, there is actually no news at all without Jesus.

Genesis becomes a celebration of creation as the Master puts pieces together. It also feels like these events represent the New Testament events. “Let us make humankind in our image” feels like a call to be born again – creation in the process. The factory isn’t closed!

It should be in God’s image and not after man’s will or intention. “Born of the Spirit” (John 3:5-8) and the Spirit of God hovering over the waters and declaring things could be important parallels.

The world of sin parallels the darkness from which God’s creation was separated. The Light of the world comes to give us light by giving Himself. The message of salvation becomes bigger and heavier each time we look at Jesus from the “Beginning”.

Let Jesus be everywhere! Then the light is everywhere. Life happens. Death disappears. Darkness separates. Then the individual becomes a new creation! This is always big news!
