Revelation 21 Commentary
Chapter 21 completes the long journey. The events of chapter 19 spill into chapters 20 and 21.
The beast and the false prophet are captured and thrown into the lake of burning sulfur. The dragon is also captured and thrown into the same lake. Unbelievers share the same fate – they are thrown into the lake of fire. The cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters, and all liars.
The LORD commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous. The opposite of this quality is cowardice. It’s little wonder that it comes up first on the list!
Chapter 19 began by celebrating the fall of Babylon. Babylon represents the evil systems of this world. The beast is the individual who represents the interests of the dragon (serpent) at the top of a secular system. The false prophet operates in the religious sphere but is always part of the dragon’s mission.
Then we have humans who make their decisions against the interests of the Lamb. The cleanup exercise is complete but one item remains: The restoration of creation. The LORD makes everything new. Under this arrangement, there is no pain and suffering. Evil is eliminated from creation!
“Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children.” Verse 7. You are reminded of the letters to the churches. The saint has been in battle…
The Spirit’s message to the Ephesians confirms it. Ephesians 6 verse 12. Our battle is against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Then you know John hasn’t seen stories!
The Master’s grand plan boils down to this moment. The saint is elevated and insulated from punishment. He or she is called the child of God!
It’s a point of justice; it is also a point of celebration.
The identity of the one seated on the throne is interesting. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. He also gives water to the thirsty at zero cost. Could this be the same one who promised to give the Samaritan woman “living water”?
Then Revelation becomes an easy book! Simply believe. Believe in Jesus – the LORD Jesus. The water He gives becomes a spring of water welling up to eternal life. John 4 verse 14.
