Revelation 19c Commentary
Scholars have identified seven promised blessings. Of course, seven. Can it be anything else! They are called the beatitudes of Revelation! Chapter 19 hosts one of them: Verse 9.
“Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”
Others can be found in the following verses: 1vs3, 14vs13, 16vs15, 20vs6, 22vs7 and 22vs14.
An interesting feature of John’s literature is his emphasis on Jesus as a distinct character independent of the LORD God Almighty. He is the Lamb of God. He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah. He is the good Shepherd. His work in these offices is full-time.
At the same time, John unashamedly and unapologetically underlines the fact that Jesus is the Creator God, the worshiped Lamb of God at the center of the throne. He is the Sovereign LORD whose name the Hebrews couldn’t dare pronounce. In this chapter, John has an interesting way to refer to the I AM God. He is the one with a name known only to Himself! Verse 12.
Imagine a name no one else knows, not even the LORD, God Almighty, the all-knowing God!
The only explanation is that the Rider on the white horse is the Sovereign LORD, God Almighty. The I AM God – a name only God Himself knows!
The mystery of the Divinity! We stick to what we know!
The Rider isn’t alone. He is at the head of an army (armies) of those dressed in white. Verse 14.
At what point is the saint said to be washed clean, as white as snow? Remember the statement that we are not of this world. It could be that the saint living today, 2024, is part of these armies enjoying victory over the enemy! Regardless, our current battle could always be a miniature version of the grand battle!
Revelation is meant to reveal spiritual realities behind the scenes – in the distant past (the beginning), in the past, immediate past, in the present, in the future, and distant future. It covers the entire time allowance!
The blood-soaked garment and the sword (the word of God), doesn’t this sound familiar? “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony” Chapter 12 verse 11a.
Revelation can be the first 3 chapters only but we have layers on top of these letters to the churches, like the layers on an onion.
In His letters to the church (churches), the LORD Jesus always went like, “he who overcomes”. The battle was always in the present. We mustn’t diminish the importance of victory today and now. We must honor the name of the LORD by overcoming evil. And in this battle, let the saint know we have the Rider of the white ahead of us. Nothing stands in His way!
