Revelation 18 Commentary
Chapter 18 gives the picture of “current Babylon”. She exists during the church age. The call for God’s people to come out ‘Her’ is a call to repentance. It isn’t a call to vacate the physical city.
Another name for Babylon is “the world” as found in the Gospel of John. Therefore, Babylon cannot be a physical location. We are not of this world. There is deception, corruption, and greediness among countless other evil commodities.
Don’t trade with her. “Come out her my people and be separate”. Quit deception, corruption, and greediness; a loveless life, materialism, and hatred; then know you out of Babylon.
Babylon will be punished. The world won’t continue on this path forever.
Recheck the lament and see how it describes the world: Demonic, impure spirits, extreme uncleanliness, and corrupt leadership. Corrupt people get rich. Deception gets you the job. Cooked-up figures shoot you to the top of the richest of the world. “The merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries”.
Saint must know and decide; they won’t be part of the world (Babylon).
Come out of her so you won’t receive any of her plagues. Saints have known peace even in moments of anxiety. They know true love and joy even when the richest of the world fake laughter. There is a package of care, a dosage of God’s presence (grace) in the valley of the shadow of death.
Therefore, you could view Babylon’s punishment as both a “now” and “not yet” situation. The people we view as being happy aren’t happy at all. They chase the wind constantly. They constantly run away from their own shadows. They admire the saint’s calm life – a truly blessed position.
While all these things happen, the saint still enjoys the presence of their Master, the LORD Jesus. He promised them His presence forever. “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
