Jude 1 Commentary

Jude Commentary

Jude should be a blood brother of the man Jesus, together with James! Those who believe that Jesus was 100% human can ask Jude about it! But Jude is a slave of Jesus Christ. Verse 1. To Jude, Jesus is no longer a big brother he shared meals and sleeping space with; He is Yeshua the Messiah!

“To those who have been called…” You could add a thought to the term “called” by arguing that the called are here because they responded with a “Yes, LORD” – the called answered. The ‘called’ have been kept for Jesus Christ. The saint pours out praises to LORD because they stand – not because they have learned the art of following Jesus, but because they have been “kept”.

Jude’s letter warns the saints against evil infiltration. The bad eggs have mixed themselves among the called; the purpose is to mislead and dishonor the name of the LORD. Infiltration is a secret operation. They probably show up in sheep’s skin but they are wolves inside.

You know them by their fruit. They “pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality”. Check their lives and see the perversions!

Jude is a preacher. He draws his examples from common Jewish folktales – part of which isn’t recorded in the holy script. Paul used the same methodology several times.

Never mind genuine ignorance, judge these imposters based on the things they know – simple matters of morality. They never pass this test!

Jude references the teachings of the apostles – much of the New Testament covers the teachings of the apostles. Scoffers follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit.

But there is a thin line between professional scoffers (infiltrators) – those already condemned, and those who deserve mercy. Some must be snatched from the fire. This cannot be a human operation. Let the Spirit lead. Humans can never know!

Jude’s doxology is probably the most beautiful of them all. It is pasted here for your enjoyment!

To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.
