2 John Commentary

2 John Commentary

Seeking to simplify communication, some Bible translations have omitted the word “chosen” or “elect” from verse 1. In this way, the church or a local church becomes a loose grouping of believers without great significance. That’s how we have sacrificed of the importance of the church as viewed from Heaven.

The church is a loved entity and chosen by God to be a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession…

“All who have come to know the truth” love this local church. What is your view of other local churches? Yes, they may not do things your way but they are Bible-based, Spirit-filled, and fear the LORD. Do you love them?

Verses 1 and 2 have the word “truth” used in different contexts. Loving in truth (verse 1) may mean being sincere. The truth (Truth) that remains united with us refers to the person of the LORD Jesus Christ – the Way, the Truth, and the Life. If we love others (even other local churches), let it be on account of the Truth. If you won’t love them because of their appearance, love them because of Jesus.

John repeats certain words endlessly. You are forced to stop and check them out. Living in truth, verse 4, refers to a life without deception. Looking at it this way brings to mind a life lived away from satan’s deception – fake love, fake joy, fake peace, fake success, fake promises… It’s all deception! We aren’t part of that!

At the back of his mind, John thinks about lies and the father of lies. He nibbles at the concepts that are fully covered in the gospel that bears his name – the Gospel of John. Truth distinguishes itself from deception in a transformed soul. You immediately know the difference!

But it’s a play on words. You actually don’t live in truth until you have lived in Truth.

“Beginning” is another word dearly loved by John. He starts his gospel by talking about the beginning. The many “beginnings” in John’s volumes take you to the genesis (Genesis) of all things. This word puts Jesus at the beginning of life for the saint. It’s a new creation!  The old is gone, behold the new!

Deception isn’t just an idea around. It’s an active product aggressively sold by satan and his agents. The saint is warned! “Watch yourselves, so that you won’t lose what you have worked for.” We have something very valuable to protect. Don’t be casual with deceivers!
