1 John 1 Commentary

1 John 1 Commentary

The “beginning” of verse 1 is probably a reference to Genesis. Of course, the Book of Genesis referenced the Creator God who already existed. Therefore, the beginning could be the beginning of the life we know and not the beginning of God.

It is this God who decided to interact with humanity.

John and his friends (and many others) heard His voice. They saw Him; they touched Him. The story of Genesis is no longer a myth. In Jesus Christ, the story of creation is a living process.

Jesus is the Word. He is the “word” spoken during the creation process. He is life. John thinks of Jesus in terms of creation. He wants us to see Jesus as the Creator God. He also wants us to see Jesus as “everything”. He isn’t simply one of the ways; He is the Way, the only Way.

We joy only by fellowship with the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Life cannot be had without Jesus. Ponder.

John’s love for abstract objects reveals more about Jesus than we possibly appreciate. God is light. Jesus is the light of the world.

Fellowship with the God of light means you cannot be in God’s company with darkness in your heart.

The works of darkness would be equivalent to Galatians 5 verses 19 to 21. “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like.”

The works of the light would be Galatians 5 verses 22 and 23. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” These would be the works of Jesus, who is the Light – the works of the Spirit of Jesus.

See how the scripture simplifies the complex conception of life! Love isn’t an abstract object or an emotion. Jesus is Love. He is the light. He is all that we call life and all that we think support life! In Him we live and have our being.

Jesus isn’t and cannot be a simple subject you study in books written by men. You are the book! Life becomes the book. Your own breath becomes the book. You realize you won’t even read these lines without Jesus. He sustains life.

A believer is one who acknowledges Jesus and attempts to enthrone Him. It remains an attempt as humans don’t have it within themselves to fully understand the glory of Jesus. But it’s always a journey the same Jesus helps you undertake.
