2 Peter 3 Commentary

2 Peter 3 Commentary

Peter has spoken quite extensively about the scriptures. In his mind, the scriptures consist of “words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our LORD and Savior through your apostle”. Verse 2. He thinks of Paul as an apostle; Consequently, Paul’s “hard to understand” letters have the same authority as the letters written by the great apostle John.

We should include the letter of Jude from which the second chapter of this volume is pasted!

You can easily think that Peter has written this letter to authenticate the writings of the apostles – the New Testament. No. In Peter’s mind, this is a “taken position”. He merely reminds the believers of these things to “stimulate wholesome” thinking. Verse 1.

The LORD hasn’t delayed his coming. Simply put, the time hasn’t come. The LORD is forever on time. He is lord over space and time. He won’t be delayed by weather conditions!

Peter repeats the teaching of his Master. “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1 verses 7 and 8.

One important activity between Jesus’ ascension and His second coming is evangelism. Reduce this complex word to “witnessing”. Tell the world what you know about Jesus. Peter calls it the LORD’s patience for the purpose of salvation. Verse 9.

Verse 13 is everything! There will be a new Heaven and a new Earth! A place of zero wickedness! A place illuminated by the Son’s presence in His glory! The Saints cannot wait!

Who would disagree with Peter that some of Paul’s writings are hard! Aren’t we still debating issues, even today! See how Peter warns us against these meaningless debates! Paul has done the same in his last letter to Timothy!

The meat of the Christian walk is in the saint’s effort (every effort) “to be found spotless, blameless, and at peace with Him”. Can you afford to spend your every effort arguing about the depth of the river for a baptism service?
