James 5 Commentary
Who boasts of tomorrow more than the rich man? His money talks. His money decides cases for him. Everything is under control, so he thinks. But he is mistaken. James has a poem for him. Verses 1 to 6. And it isn’t good news!
Yes, the rich and terrible will have their own day in court. But the saint must be patient.
Job is a good example of perseverance. He persevered when his righteousness brought him nothing but trouble. James thinks of the saint who won’t navigate the waters of life for lack of fuel (deception); who sleeps hungry because the menu on the table is wicked. When the world’s smartest brains blame your holiness for your poverty, pain, and suffering, you need perseverance!
“Grumble” has several synonyms: Complaint, protest, or dispute. Whatever this verse means, many saints should be afraid! Verse 9.
Many of us complain because a day-old baby doesn’t have teeth! We even wish them severe punishment! And the baby isn’t even yours!
Verse 12 is familiar. The Spirit of Jesus has spoken again. All you need is a simple “Yes” or “No.” No swearing!
Saints sing songs of praise to their God when happy. They don’t drink their heads off! Trouble doesn’t lead them to more alcohol, drugs, or suicide. It leads them to the LORD in prayer! The prayer of the righteous person is powerful and effective. “Effective” means it achieves its purpose.
The Bible is interesting. In the Book of Kings, all we hear is an announcement from Elijah concerning the drought. It isn’t clear from the story that there was earnest prayer before the announcement! We are mistaken when we feel, in our unrighteousness, we can show up and simply declare things. Wrong motives, unrighteousness, and prayerlessness – only an empty declaration in the mouth. It never works!
At least we know the rains didn’t come without serious prayer!
If the child is 5 years old and without teeth, verses 19 and 20 may apply. Gentleness and love would be critical tools in the process, reflecting the love of the Father. Revelation 3 verse 19.
