James 1 Commentary
Verse 5 is a must-know and consequently a must-have verse. Who hasn’t pinched himself because of self-foolish decisions! These are desperate moments when you call yourself a fool. Self-stupidity hurts!
Too much self-stupidity and men and women commit suicide. You don’t have to; the LORD gives wisdom but you must ask. You should also express faith. This is what we get from the Book of James! Verse 1 underlines our expectations.
From: Ya‘akov, a slave of God and of the Lord Yeshua the Messiah To: The Twelve Tribes in the Diaspora: Shalom! The Complete Jewish Bible with its deep Hebrew tone brings to light the posture of the author of the Book we call James (Ya’akov). He is a slave of Yeshua (Jesus).
James speaks as a slave of Jesus. This book is about honest introspection. Then we lay it bare before the LORD.
It is a joy to experience persecutions and temptations. Verse 2.
You are in a battle. In the left corner of the ring is the desire of the flesh. In the right corner and up against the desires of the flesh is you, the saint. The two are not friends. Don’t smile at each other. Your life is at stake! Cut down sin before it grows into death, your death.
If you don’t have wisdom, it’s probably because you haven’t asked. If you have asked, it’s probably because you asked without faith! James is full of simple equations like this one.
Take pride in your humble circumstances. Verse 9. This is for believers! Hurting, hating, cursing, sleeplessness, anxiety, and fear; the world wants you to have them all. These aren’t options for the saint. Check it again. Take pride in your humble circumstances. Other references would call it contentment!
Wealth is transient. Always. But what investment we put in! In the end, it amounts to self-stupidity. Wisdom is required; wisdom from the LORD.
Salvation is a gift. Every saint knows it.
Listen more; talk less. Listening alone isn’t enough. Do what the word says.
Your Christian walk boils down to simple things: “…look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” Verse 27.
