Hebrews 13 Commentary
The world’s view of angels is misleading. We think of all-white winged creatures. Both the New Testament and the Old Testament have a different view.
You could interact with an angel without your knowledge. The reason is simple: an angel speaks your language! He is everything human! Remember that individual who showed up from nowhere and helped you come out of a critical situation. They said their goodbye and that was it; never to be seen again.
Your suspicion could be right. Angels are active agents the LORD dispatches to help saints in all sorts of situations. While on the mission of Heaven, you show up in any form to suit the event and the moment! Whenever we start our conversation with words like, “fortunately”, we are probably hiding the fact that the LORD was behind it all – when forgotten PIN codes come to memory suddenly, when unsolicited generosity overflows in your direction, or when a car stops within inches of a crash!
Verse 3 repeats the command: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself”.
Verse 4 is an indictment against our world. Sexual perversion will be judged! It is shocking how casual the world is about it all. Let this verse ring a bell. Sexual immorality and the love of money are twin towers of wickedness. You don’t know which one tops the pile! Both are highlighted.
Contentment heals the money disease. Verse 5. Fear is driven out by the knowledge that God is with the saint.
Chapter 13 contains some deep Old Testament concepts and can only be expanded by application. The audience of this book wasn’t in doubt about the meaning of this material. Eating foods sacrificed to idols would be equivalent to “conformity”. There is a life out there that the LORD hasn’t ordained. You cannot chase money with the same energy as the sinner. Money is the sinner’s god; it isn’t your god. So check the elements the world consumes or the items that they think sustain them and see that the Creator God isn’t in the equation. You want to stay away from the race!
Instead, let generosity flow. Humility becomes important. Pray for others and show concern.
Verse 17 is a hard one. Bad leaders make “confidence” and submission very difficult. You will have endorsed godlessness! But this chapter has clues. The scripture is talking about leaders whose way of life is godly. Verse 7. Therefore, verse 17 could be read in tandem with verse 7.
Hebrews is closed by Chapter 13. Yes, 13 chapters and the author still thinks of it as a brief letter! The subject of God’s Son isn’t one to be exhausted in a man’s lifetime. One thing is clear: This volume has shown us how little we know!
