Hebrews 12b Commentary
See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. Verse 16. Now we understand why Esau was rejected. Godlessness. Of course, there are clues in the Book of Genesis concerning Esau’s critical shortcomings.
However, it’s the connection between the saint’s sexual immorality and Esau’s destiny that catches our attention. They are similar in many respects. Esau wasn’t going to die of hunger as he foolishly assumed. A sexual drive isn’t indispensable as many a sinner think. Both are feelings – desires of the flesh. They both lie to us when they demand attention.
They both dismiss the consequences of their demands as nothing. If you wreck your marriage because of a sinful sexual encounter, then you understand just how deceived you were! You also understand that you and your feelings are two different entities. The deceiver and the deceived are two different elements. You face the consequences alone; the deceiver won’t be anywhere near to help you through the tough moments!
They are both extremely short-term in scope, blind, and unreasonable.
The scripture draws our attention to Esau’s scandalous decision to highlight the gravity of sexual sin. A man’s destiny is at stake!
The scripture has this important line: the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Remove Esau’s carelessness (godlessness) from the equation and you have a different lineup. It’s a warning that scripture posts for our ears and for our action. It should be louder to us especially when we think we can have the blessing without the right of the firstborn.
You cannot despise a position of righteousness and still expect God’s blessing. What was Esau thinking! Indeed, what are we thinking when we despise a position of righteousness and still expect God’s loving arms around us!
If there is strife, have you made every effort to live at peace with everyone? Not one effort! Every effort! Holiness requires the same energy. There are very few instances when the sinner doesn’t have options!
The route to God isn’t impossible. Approachable, accessible, and altogether welcoming!
