Hebrews 10b Commentary

Hebrews 10b Commentary

The blood of goats won’t take away the sins of the individual; the blood of Jesus does. However, the blood of Jesus won’t take away man’s free will. If anything, man’s freedom to decide his own destiny is restored. So we have several areas of decision.

We can come near to God with a sincere heart and a sure faith. It also means we can be far from God or come to God with an insincere heart. Our faith can also be unsure – if ever that is possible! Faith is always sure by description!

Other areas of decision would be concern, love, and help for others. Fellowship becomes important.

But just when you think the Eden days are back, here comes suffering. You wonder why. Well, believers are small christs – small versions of the Christ. They have become like their father – Jesus Christ. By the will of the Creator God, Christ suffered. And so by the same will, the small christs also suffer.

But the term suffering can be very interesting. The suffering that results from loss of assets, name, or status isn’t suffering at all! The saint has wealth in their possession, far greater than what they lose. They inherit a name that is greater than all names. They have found a pearl of great value. They haven’t minded losing all!

They are willing to lose more – these saints! This kind of suffering!

It can be called freedom from enslaving materialism, vanity, or nothingness. They have broken free. Yes, slavery knocks on the door, wanting the former victim back. Hebrews is written to warn the saint to stay away from slavery and her agents.

Yes, even here, on this pilgrimage, a man who gives up a bar of gold for a piece of charcoal knows there is more in charcoal than in gold! He has made the right decision! But there is more to the story: A reward awaits him in glory. Verse 35.

It takes faith but that is our subject tomorrow.
