Hebrews 10 Commentary
Of course, they knew as we do, “It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” Verse 4.
The concept was simple. One transferred his sins to the animal. Then the sinful animal died in place of the sinner. Of course, not all sacrifices were sin offerings. However, this chapter focuses on sin offerings.
The point is this: the sinner must die. So the poor animal dies in place of the sinner. But where did mankind get this understanding? “And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Genesis 2 verses 16 and 17.
This ritual was a symbol. The blood of goats cannot remove sin from a human.
God’s plan for sin is Jesus Christ (Yeshua the Messiah). It has always been Jesus Christ. The Law wasn’t plan A while Jesus is plan B. Only one plan exists, the “Jesus plan”. Jesus is the script for the Old Testament. The Law is a shadow cabinet for the real cabinet – the Jesus government.
The Old Testament is a stage where people act the realities of the New Testament. But this stage is real. No cosmetics, no animation, no visual effects, no sound effects. Real people on this stage die or live according to the rules. Live bullets are used!
The realities come with Jesus. You can transfer your sins to him. Then he dies in your place. You are free to live again! To live a life free of sin! This is the essence of salvation: “Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.” John 8 verse 11.
The story of the woman caught in adultery reveals God’s plan for man’s salvation. The woman wasn’t stoned but Jesus was (later). He died in her place. It is his blood that removes sin.
Verse 13 is important. After offering himself, Jesus (Yeshua) sat down at the right hand of God, waiting for his enemies to be made a footstool for his feet. Who are these enemies? Not every sinner qualifies under this description. Some are saints in waiting. They must be reached by existing saints. So the saint remains in human form to reach out to other humans.
