Hebrews 9 Commentary
The early church understood the scriptures as the work of the Holy Spirit. Verse 8. Saints today aren’t different. By and through the scriptures, the Holy Spirit speaks to His creation.
The term ‘temple’ is lightweight. The term ‘Sanctuary’ would weigh more as it brings in the thought of sanctity. However, there is a heavier term: the house of the LORD”.
The temple, as we understand it, is actually the house of the LORD. But they knew, as we know, that the LORD God Almighty cannot be confined within the walls of a man-made structure. The temple, therefore, remained a way or a symbol to reach the Sovereign Creator.
Chapter 9 doesn’t explain civilization. Don’t think of it as a contrast between the old and the new. The new covenant isn’t new because technology has improved. Or because mankind is now smarter and in need of a new system.
At its inauguration, the temple was but a symbol. Solomon knew better. “But will God really dwell on earth with humans? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!” 2 Chronicles 6 verse 18.
So whatever happens at the House of the LORD is meant to appease the LORD. It also represents fellowship. It’s a place of social life with the LORD. Like a normal house, we have food, lighting, and other implements for washing, cooking, and other activities.
All of it was symbolic and Israel knew. This was simply a shadow act. In Jesus, humanity has the Creator God who Israel modeled by the Sanctuary systems. Jesus is huge news! The God represented by a golden box came and dwelt among us.
Humanity has the Creator God right in their midst. Jesus is the God we have always desired, the LORD God we have always missed, and the Creator God we have always needed.
Jesus is the reality of the symbols we find at the Sanctuary.
The once inapproachable God walked and chatted with mankind. He is the God mankind could never see. The days of Jesus Christ (these days) are truly special! Feed into these thoughts and see how special the knowledge of Jesus is! Those who have known Him know they can talk to Him in prayer. They can honor Him with a godly life. They have the power to stay away from wickedness because Jesus especially empowers them.
The new era is truly amazing but you must first get there! This chapter passes as a great campaign message to promote the brilliance of God’s salvation through the Son. His government is here and it’s all perfection from above! The old is gone and the new is here. Hallelujah!
