Hebrews 8 Commentary

Hebrews 8 Commentary

The king or David’s Lord is supposed to sit down at the right hand of the Majesty in Heaven. Psalm 110. Verse 1 suggests that the high priest is also supposed to sit down at God’s right hand. The reason is that the two entities are one.

The king is sat down at God’s right hand as God “clears house” – probably basking in victory over his enemies. The high priest is sat down at God’s right hand but not exactly enjoying the Father’s company. He is on duty! These aren’t future events. The tone is wrought by a “happening-now” feeling.

Think of this king as the Commander-In-Chief of the armies of the LORD. When the battle intensifies against the saint (greediness, arrogance, a loose tongue, pride, hatred, immorality…), the Commander dispatches legions of able troops to come and flatten the enemy. You are victorious!

The high priest isn’t moving around with physical censors. Of course, these would be the prayers of the saints – putting in a good word, interceding, and mediation. So perfect worship happens!

No more models. Jesus is the real thing! What we have all been waiting for! What we have desired! Forget the old system and its imperfections. The reality of the gospel is that Jesus came to set us free. It is real. Leave it at the feet of Jesus and see your enemies (addictions, wickedness) flee.

The law in their minds and hearts, verse 10, may refer to the rule of the Son over the total man – both soul and body; our emotions, thoughts, and actions.

This chapter shifts attention from down here to up there. The battle is no longer between you and wickedness; but rather, between wickedness and the Commander. You will have escalated the war. And you know who wins!

The prayers are said here but real action is in Heaven. The high priest is busy with these articles of worship!
