Hebrews 6 Commentary

Hebrews 6 Commentary

In computer programming, the programmer uses a low-level language to write instructions for the computer. Don’t be mistaken about the term ‘low’; it has nothing to do with importance. Instead, it could mean foundation, base, or pillar on which you build everything else.

“Turning away from useless works and believing in God” is material without which we cannot build our spiritual lives. No building ever stands without a foundation! That we still have to work on the foundation saddens the Holy Spirit.

Important: A teacher isn’t one with excellent head knowledge, but one who has, by constant practice, learned to distinguish good from evil. Chapter 5 verse 14.

Important and scary also: Turning away from useless works and believing in God would be “low-level spirituality”. Like gear 1, the car won’t get anywhere without it. Don’t be happy with the higher speeds of the kingdom without gear 1! The higher speeds never exist without this gear.

Verses 7 and 8 underline the importance of fruitfulness. No one is saved and receives the Holy Spirit for nothing! The evidence is in the fruit. Then you know you are saved.

God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. Verse 10. The justice of the LORD isn’t an abstract concept. Whenever you have helped a brother, Heaven has taken note. It also means that Heaven has noted an injustice against you. Leave it in the hands of God. The matter is in court; no comments. It is this serious!

Verse 12. Laziness isn’t equivalent to physical idleness. It could mean a failure in generosity by a hard-working and wealthy man. It is a failure of faith and patience.

You can have 20 years of patience and faith. You can also have 20 years of doubt and discouragement. The difference between the former and the latter defines success in the eyes of the LORD.

God never lies. Patience flows from this fact. Faith is birthed here.
