Hebrews 5b Commentary
The meat of Christianity is in the walk and not in the talk. Teaching brings us head knowledge; training brings us righteousness. The last section brings these thoughts to help us underline the word ‘training’.
Christianity isn’t a light switch. You switch on and all is light, righteousness, and smiles. It is a process where maturity (righteousness) is achieved by training. Verse 14. Training must be constant. Irregular installments of righteousness won’t achieve anything beyond frustration. We can underline another word, ‘constant’.
A light switch once switched on, attains maximum brightness immediately. Christianity isn’t like that. There is growth. We have babies; we also have mature saints. It has nothing to do with age. The meat of Christianity is in the walk. Constant training! Verse 14.
The goal is growth; let the saint become a teacher. There is no dividing line that permanently consigns one group to the ‘students’ hostel. The goal for every saint is maturity. You will have become a teacher at this point.
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1 verse 22. We have more details in this chapter. You won’t stand up, kick the ball, and score. Training is important. You achieve a measure of success with each kick.
The Holy Spirit may teach you simple things like sharing your meal with another person. Do it. Do it more and constantly. Your head knowledge will have dropped to your heart and the LORD is pleased!
There is always a beginning, but let the baby grow. Generosity, prayer, forgiveness, gentleness, love… They are never switched on like a light switch. Training is always key! Constant training!
