Philemon 1 Commentary
Philemon is a convert to Christianity probably through Paul’s ministry. He is a wealthy man going by the fact that he owned slaves or a slave. Onesimus is yet another convert to Christianity through Paul’s ministry.
Going by Paul’s description, verse 1, Philemon is a leader in the church that meets at his home – Philemon’s home. On the other hand, Onesimus is serving the LORD together with Paul as a missionary.
The two saints are connected by an interesting past. Onesimus was Philemon’s slave at one point in the past. Now they are both believers. The master/slave relationship between them ended when Onesimus sought freedom by running away.
There is a past that both believers must resolve. Onesimus has heard the gospel and knows something must be done about his own past. He owes Philemon by running away or stealing – who knows! This is all in the past, forgiven and ‘forgotten’ by God but Philemon may still have unhealed wounds.
Restitution is important so the offended people don’t slander the LORD because of our past vices. You can win the battle but take care of the landmines by the enemy! They may still punch holes in your victory!
We have a practical situation for Philemon and Onesimus. Philemon must forgive and embrace; Onesimus must confess in humility and seek forgiveness. And both are church leaders! There is giving, taking, sacrifice, and humility – all for the sake of Jesus.
It is possible that Philemon has moved on. He is now a believer and holds nothing against Onesimus. It is all but water under the bridge. But Onesimus may have his own battles with his conscience. Release the brother! Or, a transformed Onesimus is happily serving the LORD as now the LORD’s slave – all clear and great. But Philemon may have a different opinion about it all. Forgiveness and reconciliation clear both existing and perceived differences. It is for our relationships down here. It is for the good of the gospel.
