Titus 1 Commentary

Titus 1 Commentary

Paul introduces himself as a slave of God. He also underlines his apostleship. It is a descriptive title. The LORD Jesus commissioned Paul to “further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth”. The term apostle means “the sent one” or messenger.

The Christian walk draws its strength from the hope for eternal life under the blessed presence of the LORD God Almighty – the just and righteous God who doesn’t lie.

We could be logical about it and see the emptiness of a life without Jesus. Imagine yourself at the pinnacle of success. Are you fulfilled? Look at non-material qualities like wisdom, authority, power, and fame. Have them in abundance and see if you are fulfilled. It is always a chase after the wind! Contentment is always the fruit of the Spirit. You cannot have it any other way!

Death will always stand in the way of every man’s effort. The terrible situation we have! The good news is that Jesus, who doesn’t lie, comes with a package of eternity and fulfillment under the feet of the Creator God – exactly as it was in the Garden of Peace and Tranquility. Paul is God’s slave and a messenger of this good news!

Administration of the process of preaching the good news is in the hands of all God’s people. They are commissioned to make disciples of all nations. Jesus manages this team through individuals who must be blameless, faithful to their wives, and whose children are godly. They are called elders. There are more character-based traits in an individual that qualify them to serve in this position. Of course, the list of qualifications would make countless churches leaderless if followed strictly!

One of the tasks of an elder is to silence wrong teachings. It is rare for a wrong teaching to flow from an honest heart! Often, wrong teachings are fuelled by ungodly objectives. Perpetrators are no longer slaves of Jesus; they seek their own interests. They have become their masters! They must be stopped!

They must be rebuked to bring them under the authority of Jesus – true faith. It means an elder has the objective of gathering and not scattering. You try your best to bring back the sheep.

Verse 16 is serious! False teachers claim to know God. But check their actions. Is there godliness? It is a simple test! Check inside their lives and see how detestable, disobedient, and unfit they are for doing anything good.
