2 Timothy 3 Commentary
Among the loveless all-round wicked are folks with a form of godliness – a sort of godliness but without power.
This could refer to folks who speak mountains but deliver mole hills! They never walk the talk. They may even be perfect on intentions but that’s all there is. They lack the power to action their professed intentions.
There is a danger that believers can fall into this category. When wickedness and deception define our world, conformity becomes a real danger to the saint. The saint may stand between holiness and wickedness. The final result is a form of godliness but without power. Blame greediness and deception for the robbery!
The scripture hasn’t described one individual. It has described various colors of sinfulness. One may not be painted in all these colors! Your white rob may be stained by a love of money or any other color or combination of colors – of course, God forbid!
Godliness comes with persecution. Verse 12. The perpetrators of evil will worsen. The world isn’t getting better!
But Timothy isn’t defenseless. The situation isn’t desperate for Timothy. The Holy Scriptures exist to help him – teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.
After teaching, you learn that loving members of the household of faith is a command. After training, (doing it consistently under coach Holy Spirit) you learn to love the Jesus way.
