2 Timothy 2 Commentary
Predestination or election concepts are well founded in scripture, and so is “free will”. They may not be two extreme ends as we often think of them. Verse 19 gives us some clues.
“The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” Verse 19.
Check the second statement above and see how it underlines “free will”. Those who won’t turn away from wickedness won’t taste Heaven. There is a decision. Let this fact stand tall, cast in steel and concrete! But the thought that the LORD knows all things – past, present, and future, means that successful candidates are known even before an exam is written! (First statement, above)
Based on this knowledge, University or College places can be secured and resources put together for the successful candidates. All these preparations are strictly Heaven’s Boardroom secrets. Down here, we know nothing. We still need to work hard and pass our exams. We also know success in these exams depends on diligence.
We also know the Holy Spirit is present to help us pass this exam. He provides the leakage. The decisions we make determine the end result.
We have to deal with our own battles. We must turn away from wickedness if we confess the name of Jesus. We must flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. “Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels”. Keep the eyes on the ball! Many distractions exist but write your paper well. The exam isn’t impossible but know distractions exist.
“In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use.” Verse 20 seems to support the thought that the LORD God created some components for special purposes while others are for ordinary use. Thus, an individual’s destiny is permanently defined.
Check it again. See how a human decision transforms an article from “ordinary use” to “special use”. What a thought! Rejects or scams can pass this exam! There isn’t anyone permanently fixed in Group C! Even in these lines, we can see the generosity of the LORD. Verse 21.
Verse 26 is good news. It is actually possible to change! “They will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.” An escape from evil is possible! The LORD Jesus came to give us this opportunity! The gospel is this great news!
