2 Thessalonians 3 Commentary

2 Thessalonians 3 Commentary

Yes, there is suffering. Much of it is inflicted on the saint by the evil one working through evil people. But as the LORD commanded, the saint can ask to be delivered from the evil one by prayer. Prayer should be a godly response to suffering.

In this book, Paul and his team have prayed for the Thessalonians – on several occasions, in fact, constantly. Chapter 1 verse 11. But Paul also asks for the prayers of the saints. Verse 1.

Christianity isn’t a system of blessings flowing from the top to the bottom via the intersession of the top man. It would probably be best defined as a system of blessings flowing in all directions based on the intersession of the saints. God remains the one and only source.

The LORD Jesus taught us to pray this way: “Deliver us from the evil one”. The ‘us’ in this statement refers to me and the brethren. The brethren could be named individuals like Paul who must be delivered from “wicked and evil people”. You cannot say the Lord’s Prayer too fast!

You know there is a problem when the saint’s prayer is full of cars, houses, projects, and children… We read this chapter and see key items: The ministry of the word, protection from the evil one, and hearts that are directed in God’s love.

Laziness isn’t part of the fruit of the Spirit – maybe the spirit but never the Holy Spirit. The saints must respond to laziness with a hard stance. The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat. The word used is “shall”. Enforce it with passion. Don’t let misplaced generosity spoil this command.

This kook has a simple plot; a simple structure. The Apostles (Paul, Silas, and Timothy) want to dispel the false impression that the Day of the LORD had passed. The rest of the items are housing-keeping matters of the faith.

It would pass as a great reference for the intercessor’s work.

Thank God for the brethren. 1 verse 3. Pray that the believers stay the course and remain worthy candidates for the calling. 1 verse 11. Pray that the LORD, by His power, brings to fruition every desire for goodness. Pray that the name of Jesus is glorified in the brethren. 1 verse 12. Pray that the saints are encouraged by the LORD and their hearts are strengthened. 2 verse 17.
