Ephesians 2 Commentary

Ephesians 2 Commentary

The ruler of the kingdom of the air – the spirit who is now at work in the disobedient. It’s a direct reference to the devil. It is singular, the ruler. Later, in Chapter 6, the apostle refers to rulers, authorities, powers, and forces. We have a system!

The system expresses itself through the cravings of the flesh – the desires and the thoughts. Verse 3. The result is death and death everywhere. It is deserved.

But Grace says no. It is by grace that we have been saved. Not by works! No one goes to Heaven by performance! It is all by grace – the Grace of the LORD expressing itself through Christ Jesus. Part of the package is a task list – the good works. Good performance is the fruit of salvation and not the cause of salvation!

Death in this chapter has nothing to do with the cessation of biological functions of the body.

The term “Temple” in this chapter has nothing to do with a brick-and-mortar structure. We are talking about a multicultural community of God’s children spanning both time and space. God dwells within this temple by His Spirit.

Think of it, the presence of the Spirit means the presence of God. Verse 22. See how the scripture freely uses the following terms to mean the same thing: Spirit, Holy Spirit, Spirit of Jesus, and Spirit of God.

The Spirit among or in the temple of the LORD (the Body of Christ) is actually full deity in attendance! Full strength appearance! Of course, this is incredible! Hallelujah!
