Galatians 6 Commentary

Galatians 6 Commentary

We can identify three components: you, the Spirit, and the Flesh. Both the Spirit and the Flesh place demands on you. You simply decide which one to live by. You are a child of God if you choose to live by the Spirit of God. You reap destruction if you live by the Flesh.

Living by the Spirit isn’t always attractive. A life of truth, integrity, and purity isn’t always rewarded by this world. But don’t tire doing good. God assures you of a harvest if you don’t give up. Verse 9.

If anyone is caught in sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore him gently. You probably don’t expect anything else since the Spirit is gentle! Never one to lose the battle easily, the Flesh may tempt you into pride or anger as you restore your brother. Be on the lookout!

Don’t measure anyone’s godliness against your own. That’s the correct spelling for pride! Use the scripture. When used correctly, the scripture (by the illumination of the Spirit) helps all of us, including the rescue team!

In the Book of Romans, it wasn’t uncommon to hear the term “the Law of the Spirit”. Verse 2 refers to the Law of Christ. The two are the same. Come post-Calvary, Jesus exists by His Spirit – the Spirit or the Holy Spirit. The two are one and the same. Living by the Spirit is living by the Laws of the Spirit. You will have trashed the demands of the flesh at this point!

Circumcision isn’t part of the Laws of Christ! It makes no difference if you are circumcised or not. Verse 15.

So, what is the way forward? Let’s not talk about circumcision and the Law, there are more important matters of faith. Growing into the likeness of Jesus is more important. Look at Paul, he has the marks of Jesus! Forget the mark of circumcision!

You could underline a couple of words in Galatians and that’s it for a summary! The “Spirit” against the “Law”. The Spirit against the “Flesh”. The Law existed because of the demands of the Flesh and humanity’s weakness against the demands of the Flesh. The Law was and is always a weak defense mechanism against wickedness. God’s working solution is the Law of the Spirit! Call it the Law of Christ.

The Law of Christ is everything within one word! It is gloriously bigger than our words and imagination. It is everything the LORD intended! The master plan! The desire of ages! And we can have it – packaged in a life under, by, and for the Spirit!
