2 Corinthians 8 Commentary

2 Corinthians 8 Commentary

“The goal is equality.” verse 14b. Yes, it is in the Bible – a poorly kept injunction. We have a couple of exceptions. “Whoever shall not work shall not eat.” You will have disqualified yourself from the world of equals!

The giver has over-given when the receiver over-receives. Of course, laziness disqualifies one from the list of receivers.

“At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need.” Verse 14a.

“Plenty” is relative, both in time and space. Your poverty here could be your “plenty” there. Your “plenty” today could be your poverty tomorrow. The goal is equality. The word is “need”. Needs and not wants. We could probably differ in wants. All may not have choice meat but let all have a meal. This seems to be the emphasis in the underlined word, “needs”.

Paul quotes Exodus and refers to manna. Yes, manna and not ornaments for women. Jewelry never rained! Needs and not wants.

The “plenty” side of the equation must remind themselves of the needs of others. When food is never a problem at home, you probably won’t consider it a need. However, it is a real need and you are commanded to ensure that others in the Body of Christ can also have a meal.

Fasting during prayer and fasting helps you feel the hunger that many have daily. Fasting helps you come down to the reality that hunger is real. It helps you elevate needs over wants. The goal is equality.

Giving attends to needs; never mind the wants! It also means your giving must be meaningful. You will not have given if a need is not met. Equality has failed. Remember the goal!

Paul. Yes, Paul. All this noise for cash which won’t even be in his pocket! It is a running theme in Paul’s life that he cared more for others than himself. See how quick
he is to praise when a good is performed! He itches for righteousness. He cheers at the sight of righteousness!

You first give yourself to the LORD before you give your gifts. Your brothers and sisters need the gifts; God needs you.

Verse 21. Make an effort to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the LORD but also in the eyes of man. Create confidence in others that you have done what is right. Don’t stumble others by not providing receipts!

Spend church money transparently. Issue timely reports and remain accountable. Let the brothers and sisters know you mean well even as you care for righteousness before the LORD.
