2 Corinthians 7 Commentary

2 Corinthians 7 Commentary

“Since we have these promises”, which promises? The scripture refers to the following promises in chapter 6.

“I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.”

“Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.”

“I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

Given the above promises, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates the body and the spirit. The kind of washing is both inside and outside.

In this letter, the Spirit speaks to us using human objects. Paul is the primary object. At the same time, Paul is an example of the ideal Christian walk. He seeks love, not just for him but for everyone else. See what joy he has because of the church’s love for Titus!

He describes for us what church love looks like. His strong words to the church aren’t born out of hatred but out of a deep love for the believers. It mirrors the love of God.

“We have wronged no one.” He wants the church to know that there is no other “elephant” in the room other than the issue of sin. When you are rebuked by a brother in love, know there isn’t anything else other than the dark spot of sin. Hate the sin but love the brother. Paul wants love to remain as he, Paul, and the brothers in Corinth combine in their hatred of sin. They are on the same team!

The letter is personal for good reasons and it is for us. Our interactions as believers often generate friction. Analyze the frictions and see that there is nothing beyond “right” and “wrong” perceptions. Can we learn from these pages and see how love must at all times keep us together?
