1 Corinthians 16 Commentary
This chapter gives us two areas of monetary support that the churches gave. One went to HQ in Jerusalem, while the other supported traveling missionaries like Paul. Verses 3 and 6.
Money isn’t the only item the church should give. Let the church be a place of friendship, honor, and encouragement. The church should be gracious and give these items generously.
Paul’s generous heart made him think about HQ’s needs as well as the needs of others. Paul’s concern for others was quite amazing. It’s like he lived for other believers. He is known for his rough persona but that is probably because that’s what he was before he met Jesus.
The Paul we meet in this chapter is a human being under the special influence of the Holy Spirit. He wants Timothy to feel at home in the church at Corinth. Stephanas is another whom the church should honor because of his hard work in the vineyard. Paul is all tenderness and loving. It is probably his loving heart that says no to the suffering of others.
The Law of the Spirit commands that an individual’s giving at church corresponds to one’s income.
When the LORD opens a door, it is generally expected that there is also a red carpet. But we are wrong. Some opportunities come amid troubles and struggles. Verse 9.
“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” Do so in love. Verse 13.
