1 Corinthians 10 Commentary
It is enough to mention that Jesus provided manna in the wilderness. But must you also say He was actually the manna Himself? Whatever Paul is thinking about! Regardless, there we have it. And Jesus confirms it. “IAM the bread of life”
Chapter 10 is a high point. Jesus is the Bread of life; you have manna in mind – the spiritual food. Jesus is the rock; you have the rock that Moses hit twice in the wilderness.
Bible students tell us there are several instances when the LORD Jesus Christ appeared to men in the Old Testament. Jesus Christ is the Creator God who breathes into a mound of clay and it becomes a living being. He is later seen with Adam taking a walk in the Garden of Peace and Tranquility. But to think of Him as a rock or manna or cloud is purely ‘next level’ spirituality.
He is the God of the burning bush, which too is mind-boggling.
And going forward, they also tell us that all the several mentions of thrones in the Book of Revelations have Jesus right up there on those thrones. He is the God we worship!
Amid this blessedness, let there be no wickedness. The LORD God didn’t spare erring Israel. The Saints shouldn’t be too comfortable!
Saints shouldn’t be naïve; just like the Lord’s supper has meaning, so do idol feasts. You drink the wine to represent the all-important “cleansing” blood of Jesus. The sacrifices of pagans are not innocent at all. Demons are always in the picture. Verse 20.
There are several practices and symbolisms today that exist to honor demons, and through these, the chief demon himself – satan. Don’t participate. Yoga, for example, is a religious ritual and not exactly an innocent fitness program – Far East mysticism. Many pagan rituals find expression in different innocent-looking forms. Saints cannot be blind to these demon-laced practices.
Regardless, the power of God is such that the saint is free. Mere contact or even consumption of demon-laced articles means nothing. But with knowledge, you really don’t want to fly an opponent’s flag on your car or at home. You don’t want to wear a T-shirt with prints like, “Yes Devil”. You shouldn’t be a fan!
And then the timeless injunction: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
