Romans 10 Commentary

Romans 10 Commentary

At any one given point, an individual is haunted by one of the two fears or problems. Both fears may be present at the same time. How do I go to Heaven? You know you cannot, so really, the question is reduced to, who will ascend or take me there?

Or, who will descend into the deep (when I die) to rescue me from the coldness of the grave?

Jesus Christ solves these problems. He lives in Heaven – it is His throne. He takes the believer there. He has prepared a room for the believer and eagerly awaits their arrival. He descends into the deep and rescues the doomed soul in resurrection.

There aren’t two paths to Heaven, the Law of Moses and the Law of Christ (the Law of the Spirit). The two are one. The Law of the Spirit is the culmination of the Law of Moses. The impossible becomes possible with the Law of the Spirit. It is the Law of Jesus Christ. He is the one who saves and ensures entry into Heaven and saves to ensure exit from the deep (grave).

The Law of Christ is right within each one of us. Obedience to the Law of the Spirit manifests itself as the individual produces the fruit of the Spirit – the evidence that the Spirit is resident and is in charge of someone’s life. Love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Galatians 5 verse 22.

But how does it all start?  If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Verse 10.

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Verse 13. Whatever Paul is talking about…and doing so in the same Book? This statement appears to open the door for everyone, whoever calls on the name of the LORD. Everyone has a chance. Here is one little statement that flattens the two hugely important chapters, 8 and 9. Predestination is not zeroed, but definitely cannot anymore take the prize! It is a tie! Probably the gold medal belongs to both!

Let the reader know that they have an excellent opportunity to call on the name of the LORD and find salvation. They can be saved from the coldness of the deep and be welcomed into the blessedness of Heaven. How? If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Verse 10.

An individual can pray for help and the saving power of the Spirit is available. “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart.” Note, that the word is also in your heart. Let it come from your heart.

Compared to chapters 8 and 9, chapter 10 is short. But it is also kind. Regardless, the author has contradicted himself. Contradiction is not defined by our poor knowledge of heavenly things. Our limited faculties are not meant to grasp everything! Nevertheless, chapter 10 contains an action plan within the reach of everyone!
