Acts 10 Commentary

Chapter 9 commenced with the conversion of Saul, later to be called Paul. We had details of how the Spirit orchestrated events and manipulated individuals for a specific purpose. We have the same picture in chapter 10.

The centurion Cornelius’ prayers and generosity reach Heaven and the LORD Jesus responds. We observe the same thing. The LORD speaks to Cornelius but doesn’t “close the deal”. His troops on the ground must do it – Peter.

Peter is prepared to accept this strange meal. Hitherto, it’s a meal that a devout Jew shouldn’t take. But after the vision, Peter has no hesitation. It is clear: The gospel won’t be confined! The blessing extends to the nations.

We also learn that the gospel is for everyone, including good people like Cornelius. We all must find the Way. Cornelius needed to know this Way.

God won’t forget your gifts to the poor! The generosity of Cornelius (and Tabitha, Chapter 9). Generosity speaks! Heaven responds!

Cornelius wants to do what some do to some ‘bosses’ or ‘papas’ or bishops. Peter is better than that. He ‘rebukes’ him insisting that he (Peter) is only human. He shouldn’t be worshipped. Of course, Cornelius isn’t entirely unaware of the fact that Peter is simply a tool. He and his large company of relatives and friends sit down to listen.

Chapter 10 is important as it opens the door for the nations. They have their own day of Pentecost! They receive the Holy Spirit! They speak in different languages. Let Peter and his team see it; let them confirm it. God’s special gift is for the nations!

See how the LORD breaks the rules! Bible class first, repentance second, and finally baptism can take place. Assuming you have passed your Bible class exams! Who cares!

Peter’s sermon had been a simple one: no definitions, no doctrine complexities, no original Hebrew talk… It was straight and to the point. The gospel doesn’t have to be complex. He pointed people to the known and moved them to the unknown – Jesus. Then they knew. Mission accomplished!

No mission is done until Jesus becomes known. Leave it to the listener to accept or reject but let people know Jesus. You will have done justice to the commission.
