Luke 22b Commentary
“For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” Verse 16.
We thought the events around Calvary were the realities to which the Passover events pointed exclusively! This verse suggests otherwise. Yes, within 24 hours, the actual Lamb of God will be slaughtered – the ultimate Passover. But there is the thought that the LORD Jesus is also talking about another layer of fulfillment when the Kingdom comes.
The Kingdom comes with the first coming of the Son – the son born to us. Isaiah 9. Part of His entourage is the government whose greatness and peace know no end. We also have justice and righteousness.
The Kingdom comes with the second coming of the Son. Unimaginably great glory will be in attendance. His rule will have started in earnest – the culmination of history.
The saint knows the rule of Christ commences when one accepts the free gift of salvation through faith alone in the grace of God alone. The two spaces become one space for the saint, the later section of the space being the brightest with the actual Presence of the Creator God.
“Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” John 1 verse 3.
Bear in mind this fact as we ponder the events in this chapter. The Creator God will be hit and mocked by mortals – it is humility at its highest point ever. Philippians 2.
Verse 20 defines the New Testament. The blood of Jesus replaces the countless ‘bloods’ that the Law defined in the Old Testament. Ponder.
Verse 30 explains the number 12 for the disciples. It was intentional.
Verse 38 is interesting. The LORD Jesus is explaining something very important but the disciples don’t get it. They think Jesus is talking about physical swords. One of them uses it during the arrest of Jesus. You can sense the frustration in Jesus’ response: “That’s enough!”
We can look at it again and see that Jesus was referring to the time of peace when they walked with Him – a time when they chased demons out of the people; when Satan fell from Heaven as a consequence of the deliverance ministry (Chapter 10 verse 11). The times have changed. Darkness rules and it is God’s will that things happen this way. So Satan enters Judas and the LORD won’t deliver Judas. The chief priest will mock Jesus and the LORD will keep quiet. It was their hour – when darkness reigns.
You need one type of courage to step out and walk on water. You need another type to confess your allegiance to Jesus when tough times come. Peter fails. We also fail. Who doesn’t want to be included on the list of the needy!
Jesus’ first trial before the Sanhedrin finds Jesus guilty. If they had the authority to execute or put someone to death, Pilate was never going to be part of the story. But these events are falling into place to fulfill the scriptures. These events were ordained by the Creator God long before Jesus’ earthly time. So we know Jesus was never going to be murdered secretly. It had to be during the Passover otherwise the scriptures would contradict themselves.
The hour when darkness rules isn’t exactly exclusively Satan’s time. The LORD has the ultimate control of events in His creation. So these characters won’t do anything outside the specs! It remains an impossibility for mortals or indeed Satan himself to win against the LORD, God Almighty.
