Luke 12a Commentary
“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more,” Jesus said to His friends, the disciples. The term ‘friend’ is important as it reveals the level of closeness in the relationship that the LORD seeks.
The LORD wants His friends to be free of the fear of death. Not because it won’t happen, but because it means nothing when it happens. Death happens to the body, the bodily tent in which we reside. The saint’s inner man remains intact. No one can touch it.
Look at the LORD’s care and unrivaled love – loving even near-worthless sparrows. No detail about your life is lost. Even the hairs on your head are all numbered, one by one. Such is the level of God’s generosity and care. When there is death, it’s because the LORD ordains it. If there is life, as we know it, it’s because the LORD ordains it.
After your body is killed, there is still you. You still exist and must interact with your God for judgment. Verse 5.
In the Old Testament, blasphemy was punished by death. Nothing has changed. The same LORD repeats the law.
The parable of the rich man and his yield makes a sad reading. Sad because this rich man represents our ambitions and hopes and aspirations. We all seek his life. Work hard and take it easy afterward. What could possibly be wrong with that? Not being rich toward God, that’s where the problem is. Do we use the same energy and resources to pursue heavenly treasures?
And this perceived stage of contentment doesn’t exist. Who has ever gotten enough and sat down to “take life easy”? Life is never like that. It is a lie from the enemy that we can have joy after accumulating wealth. It is a false hope that keeps people away from the real source of joy – the Holy Spirit.
Greediness is never satisfied. Don’t worry. Seek the kingdom – the rule of Jesus, and these things will be added to you. And it is never a trip back to greediness but a trip back to the actual object that you seek – joy and peace.
Know what you are looking for when you buy 21 guns and have 7 supercars packed at home with 24/7 security cameras. Know what you seek by staying up late at the liquor store. Call it by different names but the scripture calls it peace. It only comes from the Holy Spirit. It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Forget the imitations out there. It is qualities like this that the LORD freely gives as you seek the rule of Jesus – the rule of the Son with the government on His shoulders. Isaiah 9. He shows up at the Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9.
