Luke 10 Commentary

Luke 10 Commentary

Our reaction is predictable. Wickedness is on the increase; we mourn. Children aren’t motivated by the good news of the gospel. Schools are cults and breeding grounds for sin. The West is responsible for moral decay; they are agents of the devil. That is our opinion.

But the LORD says, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.”

Those of us who agree with the LORD have several solutions. More seminaries. Increase evangelism budgets. Focus our resources and realign our priorities – all the good terms we enjoy using.

But the LORD says, “Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

The solution is prayer. Simple. Prayer. How the LORD leads us afterward is secondary. Prayer is key, first, and the only solution to the problem according to the scripture.

“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” This is deep. In the harvest field, things happen. Authority and power, but check the physical environment: no purse, simple accommodation, and simple home meals; two believers – no entourage and advance parties. Authority and power accompany simple obedience in a simple environment.

These blessings as a special gift to “children” – a gift that prophets and kings of old could only dream about.

Through the parable of the Samaritan, we learn that “children” are not blood children of Abraham. Neighborliness has nothing to do with the blood but with faith, purity of heart, or holiness. If blood, yes but it’s the blood of Jesus. It’s a new family of faith!

The ambassadors (two by two) are dispatched and represent the LORD of the harvest in the harvest field. You are not alone. You are backed by Heaven, hence the authority and power through the name of Jesus. Take great care so that the LORD is represented in the right way.

When you open your home to the LORD, ensure housekeeping issues don’t distract you from closeness with the Guest. Martha is reminded that being in the presence of the LORD is always a higher calling. The LORD is more interested in the person than the good food, the offering, or a service.

Let there be fellowship amongst God’s people. Let not refreshments, or lack of refreshments stand in the way of fellowship – it’s an easy take from Martha’s story!
