Luke 6c Commentary

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged.” Verse 37.

Verse 39 explains it. We can never be good judges. “Can the blind lead the blind?”

Another word for revenge is to “get even” with somebody. But is it ever even? We want to murder the offender for a minor offense. We want to teach them a lesson. We are simply incapable of judging correctly. We sin in the process and must be judged by the Creator God.

If a brother comes late to church, say nothing and think nothing. Stay out of it completely. You don’t know anything. You should never be close to the courtroom if you are this ignorant!

The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher. Verse 40. It is never possible to be fully trained, but we know the more you become like the Teacher, the less you judge. The Teacher doesn’t judge; the Teacher saves. Judgment is a function for another time, and another date, and another place.

Chapter 6 is quite tough. You feel like it is impossible to be a believer. Not because you don’t want to but things like loving our enemies are simply unnatural. Verse 43 answers the puzzle. Producing good fruit is impossible if you are a bad tree. Bad trees never produce good fruit! It is a direct reference to the need for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit within an individual. Only He, and He alone makes the tree good. Then love comes out instead of hatred.

There is a huge difference between learning and training. Learning happens when the referee points to the spot and we know the ball must be kicked below the bar but in between the two sticks. It takes less than 2 seconds to know that. Training is what the footballer does day in and day out. And at the right moment, the ball is kicked and the training results can be seen.

‘Practice’ would be the right substitute for the word ‘training’. “…but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher”. Verse 40. Check and see that the scripture underlines the work training. The good builder is one who practices the words of the LORD Jesus. At the right time and when trouble comes, their training shows.

The opposite is also true. Lack of training or practice reduces a man or a woman to nothing. They fail to love even when they know they must love. Their building falls apart immediately. It is not about what you know; it is about what you are trained for.
