Mark 14a Commentary

The “Last Passover” would be appropriate here instead of “The Last Supper”. The Lamb of God would be slaughtered – the ultimate sacrifice. Let no one bother with these sacrifices again. The temple, these rituals, and the systems in attendance all come to an end.

“When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve. Verse 17. The Twelve represent the twelve tribes of Israel. They will eat the Passover meal for the last time – it should be their last. It should be Israel’s last. From this point forward, there would be no more need for the blood of lambs. Instead, the blood of Jesus would stand to protect the worshippers.

The Passover marked the commencement of the exodus – deliverance from slavery. We are witnessing history uncover an exciting phase. Freedom for the prisoners, recovery of sight for the blind, freedom for the oppressed, and proclamation of the year of the LORD’s favor!

Check Zechariah 13 and see how the shepherd (Shepherd) is struck in order “to cleanse them from sin and impurity”. It brings about the scattering of the sheep! The LORD Jesus reminds the Twelve of these details but which human is good enough to understand all these things?

Never mind the prophecies of the great prophet Isaiah and others. Look at the LORD’s demand that Abraham sacrifice his son Isaac. Better still, think of the seed of the woman in the Book of Genesis. Then know that history is coming together to launch an all-important phase for humanity.

But in the background is a subplot orchestrated by satan involving the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes. Judas Iscariot becomes part of it. Jesus must die!

The seed of the woman – yes, the woman pours very expensive perfume on the head of Jesus. Whatever it is we know the worship of the Master can be many things. It reflects the worshipper’s heart in ways that are humanly difficult to express, if not impossible. A highly materialistic world thinks of it as a waste – a decent income down the drain just like that! But it is “a beautiful thing” to the LORD Jesus.
