Mark 8a Commentary

Mark 8a Commentary

Another strange miracle. The blind man is taken out of the village and after some rituals begins to see. We have another new item. The first set of rituals works but only partially. The LORD Jesus must repeat the rituals in order to completely heal the blind man.

So strange! Isn’t the raising of a four-day dead Lazarus by mere words more work and more improbable than the restoration of sight? Why then this complication?

For sure we know it didn’t come from struggle or uncertainty on the part of the Healer. You would guess this is yet another acted parable. The word of the LORD makes us see but only in part. A time shall come when the word of the Master shall make us see clearly – the second coming, perhaps.

For now, we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 1 Corinthians 13:12.

As we saw in chapter 6, these healings, countless in this gospel, mean more than just the physical clearing of some disability or ailment. There is a lot more behind the scenes!

Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don’t you remember? Verse 18. Could this verse help explain the special miracle shortly after this event? Could the disciples be this blind man here who can see but not clearly? The LORD Jesus has to do more work on this team for them to see clearly!

It is not only the healing rituals that Chapter 9 repeats. The miracle of feeding thousands has been repeated. Yes, they saw the feeding of five thousand people. They probably need another one to ‘see clearly’. Then they won’t worry about bread. Yes, they should care but not worry – a difficult task even for us today. We need to feed more on the word. Can we now see?
