Mark 6b Commentary
In today’s language, this Server would definitely clash because of too much traffic! The disciples need rest. And some food! But the ‘me’ time flops and the disciples must attend to the large crowd again. Now both the disciples and the five-thousand-plus crowd are in need of food. The miracle of feeding more than five thousand people follows.
Part of the saint’s ministry may involve providing physical pasture for the sheep! And when physical means aren’t sufficient, let a miracle do the rest.
The miracle doesn’t come until the crowd is organized and settled. Probably the LORD won’t allow a stampede in your life. Get organized before you ask for a miracle!
Could the 12 basketfuls of leftovers be for the 12 hungry disciples? The message could be that leaders will always have their fill but only after the flock is fed.
Out of sight but still visible. The LORD Jesus could still see His disciples have trouble at sea. We can assume His joining them is meant to provide calmness. And you only get it once the Master is onboard. He comes to you while riding on the same troubled waters. It is a clear message to the saint who depends on logic to conclude the means by which the LORD can save or serve.
“Healings” wouldn’t be a bad title for Mark’s gospel. There should be more to this ministry. “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53.
Sickness is disorderliness of the normal functioning of the human body. When the body is in an unsound condition, sickness is said to have occurred. We are talking about an endless list of conditions including mental conditions. Herod didn’t know it but he was seriously sick; so was his illegal wife Herodias – mentally sick. He should have been on the healing queue!
Which saint hasn’t sinned and sat down to mourn their irrational behavior? If only I reasoned better. You immediately know your brain can be sick! LORD, help me reason properly. Or help me have a better attitude. Or as the scripture would put it, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51. These would be prayers for healing in a strict sense.
Check Isaiah 53 verse 5. Read it again and again. Shred it and assemble it again and see that “pierced”, “crushed”, “punishment”, and “wounds” mean the same thing: Suffering. “Transgressions” and “iniquities” mean the same thing: Sickness. We would guess “peace” and “healing” also mean the same thing.
See how the LORD Jesus combines these thoughts in one instance. “He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.’” Mark 5 verse 34. Or, “When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.’”. Mark 2 verse 5. Peace, healing, and forgiveness of sin are in one chorus!
How we need healing daily!
